Introduction
Net60 is the .NET Compact Framework for the Symbian OS. It brings .NET technology to the Symbian platform enabling mobile applications targeting Microsoft's .NET Compact Framework 1.0 to run unchanged on Symbian OS devices (the operating system running the smartphones of, amongst others, Nokia and Sony Ericsson).
This particular beta supports devices running:
S60 3rd edition user interface (including feature packs 1 & 2),
Symbian OS 9.0, 9.1 & 9.2.
The ground up design and implementation of the framework is such that we will also support the UIQ platform in future.
What is included?
The two main components of Net60 are:
the runtime, and
class libraries (compatible with Microsoft's .NET Compact Framework 1.0)
both of which are deployed to device when the included 'Net60 Beta 2.sis' is installed.
Also supplied are various tools, samples and online documentation to assist with the development of .NET Compact Framework applications for the Symbian OS. They are:
the Log Viewer application (for inspecting the runtime's log file),
Genesis (a tool to create .SIS packages from .NET CF apps),
sample applications, and
online documentation and forums at

What can you do with the Compact Framework?
Net 60 (beta) enables mobile software developers to target the S60 3rd edition devices with .NET Compact Framework 1.0 applications built for Microsoft Windows Smartphone. Hence, all the benefits of rapidly developing applications with the .NET suite of class libraries in managed code (C# or VB.NET) are available to the Symbian developer community. Likewise, the .NET developer community now has the opportunity to port their skills (not its code) to the Symbian device pool.
What are the pre-requisites?
In order to build .NET CF 1.0 applications for Microsoft Windows Smartphone, a combination of any of the following operating systems and IDEs can be used.
Development environments:
Supported IDE's : Microsoft Visual Studio 2003 and 2005
Operating Systems : Windows XP, Windows Server 2003 and Windows Vista.
Other pre-requisites
Nokia PC Suite [21MB]
Nokia PC Suite is used to install the Red Five Labs' "Net60 Beta 2.sis" onto device and to access the smartphone file directory.
S60 3rd edition SDK [328 MB]
The S60 3rd edition SDK is required to gain access to the SignSis tool which is used to Symbian Sign applications, in this case the runtime installation file 'Net60 Beta 2.sis'. A Forum Nokia account is required.
.NET Framework Version 2.0 (Redistributable) [23MB]
SDK for Windows Mobile 2003-based Smartphones (Visual Studio 2003 users only) [53MB]
What else do I need to know?
To get up and running in 6 easy steps, consult the Quick Start Guide.
A 'return value 0' message on application termination indicates a successful application shut down and is not a bug.
